What Is A Single Ply System?
A single ply system is a thin, flexible roofing membrane that is rolled out onto a roof and held in place through adhesives or a mechanical device. This type of roofing is usually constructed out of one of three materials: thermoset, thermoplastic, or modified bitumens. Skip ahead to the next section to learn more about the three materials.
A single ply system is perfect for low-slope commercial buildings and requires very little in the way of a support structure given its extremely lightweight nature.
Although the single ply system is not quite as strong as traditional roofing materials such as sheet metal and asphalt, it’s lightweight nature means that you save thousands of dollars on structural support.
In addition, a single ply system is very easy to install and maintain, and regular maintenance of this type of roof does not require the help of a professional. It is also an energy efficient roofing system and is CRRC (Cool Roof Rating Council) certified, meaning that this type of roofing does not contribute to the urban heat island.
Single ply systems also have a 40-year service life and is both tear and hole resistant, making this an excellent value for a commercial roofing system.
Single Ply System Materials
Thermoset membranes are created by rubber polymers like EPMD. These are the most common type of single ply roofing found on the market, and has become so popular because of its inherent resistance to industrial chemicals, ozone, and UV light.
Thermoplastic membranes, on the other hand, are created from plastic polymers. The most common thermoplastic membrane found in commercial roofing is PVC, also known as poly-vinyl-chloride, and typically include a reinforcing layer of another strong material such as fiberglass or polyester.
This type of roofing material has a long service life, excellent resistance to harsh weather, and a natural resistance to common industrial chemicals. It’s tensile strength and impermeability also make this an excellent choice for businesses located in climates with extreme weather or large amounts of rain.
Modified bitumen are hybrid membranes that combine either thermoset or thermoplastic materials with traditional roofing materials such as asphalt.
This addition of polymers to the asphalt roofing provides additional flexibility and water protection, making this an excellent compromise for commercial business owners.
